On December 20, the first night of Hanukkah, we started the celebration of our Festival of Lights.
In the community’s courtyard, in front of the big hanukiah, many members and guests, hazan Maxim Cohen recited blessing the blessing for the candles and Hanukkah and the Shehecheyanu blessing.
Baruch atah Adonai, Eloheinu Melech Ha-Olam, asher kiddeshanu b’mitzvotav, vitzivanu, lehadlik ner shel Hanukkah.
Blessed are You, Lord our God, Ruler of the universe, who has sanctified us with Your commandments, and has commanded us to kindle the lights of Hanukkah.
Baruch atah Adonai, Eloheinu Melech Ha-Olam, she-asah nissim la- avotaynu bayamim ha-hem bazman hazeh.
Blessed are you, Lord our God, Ruler of the universe, who wrought miracles for our fathers in days of old, at this season.
Baruch atah Adonai, Eloheinu Melech Ha-Olam, she-hekheyanu v-kiyamanu v-higgianu lazman hazeh.
Blessed are You, Lord our God, Ruler of the universe, who has kept us alive, and has preserved us, and enabled us to reach this time.
After recital of the blessings, the president of the Republic of Macedonia Gjorgje Ivanov lit the first candle of the hanukiah, and the Mois Hason Choir performed Maoz Tsur. Then the guests attended the evening service for Hanukkah in the Beth Yaakov synagogue where the choir performed three spiritual songs. In the community’s hall the choir and children from the Children’s Corner performed songs for Hanukah - Ocho Kandelikas, Sevivon, Chanukah Chag Yafeh Kol Kach and Oh, Hanukkah. Typical food for Hanukah was served - donuts and food prepared in oil.
As before, on Hanukkah the Jewish Community made a donation - this year we gave air conditioners to kindergartens in four municipalities in Skopje - Chair, Shuto Orizari, Centar and Karposh.
